Plasmids and cloning · research beta
BioSmith
An open plasmid and cloning workstation for labs that want familiar map and sequence workflows, stronger cloning checks, construct history and no lock-in.
What it does
- Familiar map and sequence views for SnapGene users.
- Imports SnapGene .dna, GenBank, FASTA, EMBL and GFF.
- HiFi and Gibson checks of an ordered fragment into a cut vector, with junction and reading-frame checks.
- Construct history saved with the final map.
- Tm by the SantaLucia 1998 method with the parameters shown; compare with your supplier's calculator.
- Works with your own Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or S3 storage, without an Anaphase account, once each connection is enabled.
- A local MCP server for AI agents.
Open source
BioSmith is open source under the GNU AGPL-3.0. Commercial licence terms are available from Anaphase for organisations that cannot use the AGPL; ask us.
Where your data goes
Your constructs stay on this device unless you choose a storage connection (your own Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive or S3), the optional sync server (an Anaphase server in Germany), an NCBI search or BLAST, or an AI request. BioSmith loads no analytics. AI keys are held in the app's key vault on your device, not on an Anaphase server.
AI and connectors
The assistant is optional and uses your own provider key; the hosted assistant is not yet funded. The local MCP server reads and edits plasmid files in a folder you choose. See Connect your AI.
Limits
- BioSmith covers a set of core cloning workflows well rather than every feature of SnapGene.
- Some operations are not available in browser mode; the app says so rather than appearing to succeed.
- Research beta: features may change and there is no service level agreement.
